The elegant 17th-century Golden Gate is the second gate on the Royal Route, located at the end of Dluga Street. It used to be a part of the old city fortifications. The gate was destroyed during WWII and restored in the 1990s. On the balustrade of the gate there are eight allegorical statues symbolizing the virtues: Pax (Peace), Libertas (Freedom), Fortuna (Wealth), Fama (Fame), Concordia (Agreement), Iustutia (Justice), Pietas (Piety) and Prudentia (Prudency). There is also an inscription in Latin: “Small states grow by concord, great ones fall by disagreement.”
