In order to boost economic development of some regions of Poland, Special Economic Zones were established within the country. Currently there are as many as fourteen Special Economic Zones. All of them offer preferential terms on which businesses may operate in the zones, e.g. corporate income and property tax exemptions. A special permit is required for operating within the zone. The permit may be obtained from the management of each of the zones. The management also offers assistance to prospective entrepreneurs during the whole investment procedures.

One of the Special Economic Zones is situated in the Pomeranian voivodship. It is the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSSE). The Zone was established in 2001 by combining the Special Economic Zone in Tczew and the Special Economic Zone in Zarnowiec. It covers the area of over 382 ha. The PSSE will have been in operation by November 30th, 2017. Gdanski Park Naukowo-Technologiczny is also associated with the PSSE.

The well-developped road and transport infrastructure in the Pomerania region and the PSSE areas and a geographical location close to the harbours of Gdynia, Gdansk and to the Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport make the PSSE a perfect investment site. Rich industrial traditions of the Pomerania region add to its attractiveness.

The major investors in the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone are the leading companies in the following sectors: the electrotechnical industry (All Tech, Hubner & Suhner, Gemplus Pologne, Jabil Circuit Poland, Molex Premise Networks), the metal industry (Amhil Europa), the plastics industry (Lemahieu Polska), the paper industry (International Paper Kwidzyn), the packaging industry ( Nefab Packaging Poland), the electronical industry (Flextronics International Poland), the rubber industry (MBF), the industrial process pump manufacturing industry (Tapflo). The entrepreneurs come from Switzerland, France, Sweden, Belgium, Canada and the USA.

By the end of December 2005, the total value of the capital invested by the entrepreneurs in the PSSE amounted to PLN 1428.77 million with 10,152 fully employed people.

The PSSE is managed by the Pomorska Specjalna Strefa Ekonomiczna Ltd. situated in Sopot.
