Shakespearean Festival
The Shakespearean Festival has been an international theatrical event organized every year in the first week of August in Gdańsk and in Trójmiasto. International overview of the most interesting productions from the works of the Master of Stratford is a sign of the return to a Renaissance tradition of Gdańsk. From the half of 21st century the English actors with the newest repertoire from London, appeared in Gdańsk. Gdańsk was the most Shakespearean city in Poland of that time. Here, the first Polish public theatre was created. With its architecture it referred to a characteristic Elizabethan scene. On the theatre’s boards, being also a fencing school, Shakespeare’s plays were staged, when he was still alive. Shakespeare invariably remains fashionable, up to date and inspiring. All that is most valuable in his output: universal truths and everlasting human emotions, have remained unchanged throughout the ages. It is these sentiments that make the festival so popular among the spectators. Festival is a platform of meeting and exchanging the thoughts of artists and people of culture from different sides of the world. Except from the performances, the meetings with its authors: producers, actors, dramatists, are organized. Within the festival, a rich and varied educational program is prepared, directed to the youth: young people from high schools and the students of artistic universities from Poland and abroad and also young people, who do not have an access to the culture works.
